Letter dated March 3rd, 1850 concerning a duel. Measures approx. 9-3/4” by 8”,. The letter mentions Betsy and the Chils, and a fight between Jeff Davis and a speech of Bissells. Mentions both are dead shots and in a fight they both might be killed and the last line states “I am sending you a bundle of papers in a haste” signed Bergen. ‘P.S. – Still later we have news, they were to fight at 15 paces at muskets. The particulars I have not seen’ and he further states he is sure they will both be killed. A very interesting letter mentioning Jeff Davis who became the president of the confederacy, and was rumored to have fought at least one duel. The letter is in good condition showing folding, some very slight staining, normal aging, and is addressed on its reverse in older period frame. From the William R. Orbelo Collection.
