SPRUANCE, MARGARET VANCE DEAN. 1888-1985. An autographed letter signed, sent via the American Embassy in Manila [1952]; addressed to Harriet Dean (1892-1964), in Carmel, California. 10 3/8in x 8 1/2in. Three sheets of U.S. Foreign Service onionskin stationery, with envelope. Condition: Letter is folded twice, light staining/creasing; the envelope has tears/losses, creases, toning, stamp/postal mark cut off.  Margaret Spruance was a relative/cousin of Harriet Dean's and writes to her about settling into their new life in Manila, shortly after arriving for her husband Admiral Raymond A. Spruance's role as Ambassador to the Philippines. She shares her vivid impressions of Manila, the post-war conditions, and describes the warm welcome they received, writing, "The Filipinos are a warm hearted, generous, gentle people and they have done a great deal to make Raymond feel he has come back home, as it were". Together with a single-sheet ALS from Margaret Spruance, on stationery for the Spruance's Monterey home, undated. 8 1/4in x 6in. She writes of gardening, walking, and missing New England. Condition: Toning, creases, light spotting. Along with Harriet Dean's collection of newspaper clippings regarding Admiral Raymond Spruance's role in the war, and life in retirement.
