Letitia Hamilton was rather unusual for an artist-traveller in that she rarely
used pencil or watercolour or any other light, easily transportable media,
opting instead for the more cumbersome canvas and oil paint. She first visited
Portugal in 1959 and works from this trip featured in her exhibition at the
Dawson Gallery in April 1960, including eight landscapes painted in Nazaré. The
present work depicts two women in the local folk costume of multi-layered
petticoats with black head-scarves, whilst behind them can be seen the twin bell
towers of the Santuário da Nossa Senhora de Nazaré.
