Leonard Wood (October 9, 1860 – August 7, 1927). General. Wood was a physician who served as the Chief of Staff of the United States Army, Military Governor of Cuba and Governor General of the Philippines. Early in his military career, he was awarded the Medal of Honor. He also holds officer service #2 in the Regular Army (John Pershing holds officer service #1). TLS. 1 page. November 30, 1923. On imprinted letterhead of Wood's Phillipine headquarters at the presidential palace while serving as Governor General of the Philippines. Wood writes to Mrs. Merritt; "I am inclosing herewith a card duly signed (not present). I hope it will reach you in due season. Your letter came just as I was leaving for Java, hence my long delayin answering. With all best wishes for the youngster and thanking you for the many nice things you say about the work here...Leonard Wood." Some light discoloration at left. Fine.
