American sculptor (1828–1895) notable for making one of only two life masks of Lincoln. Fantastic 4 x 7.75 mounted photo of Volk's sculpture of Abraham Lincoln for Rochester, New York's 'Soldiers and Sailors Monument,' signed on the reverse in ink, "Abraham Lincoln from the Bronze Statue for the city of Rochester, New York. To Hon. H. S. Greenleaf, with the compliments of Leonard W. Volk, Sculptor, 1892." In fine condition, with light soiling to the signed side, and light rubbing and scratching to the image side. Rochester's 'Soldiers and Sailors Monument,' located in Washington Square Park and dedicated on Memorial Day, 1892, features a ten-foot-tall bronze statue of Lincoln at the top, sculpted by Volk. According to a May 31, 1892, report in the Rochester Morning Herald, Volk was uniquely qualified for the job 'because he had taken casts of the President’s face and hands from life.' Several of Lincoln’s intimates, who traveled to Rochester for the grand unveiling, described it as the most accurate portrayal that they had ever seen. A superb inscribed photograph of this historic piece of American art.
