Leon Lhermitte, as one artist with intense academic training, became one of the most exquisite pastellistes of his era. Working near ChGteau-ThiTrry or on the coast of France, and recomposing scenes in his Parisian studio, Lhermitte created scenes of solemnity and quiet. Whether focusing on daily rustic activity or the theme of Motherhood the artist was careful to evoke a sense of intimacy. Lhermitte sent his initial entry to the Salon in 1864 when he was nineteen, and continued to exhibit charcoal drawings and paintings regularly, and pastels after 1885, winning his first medal in 1874 with La Moisson.
