Scarce vintage original 4.25 x 6.25 cabinet photo by Scherer et Nabholz of Moscow, signed in the lower border in fountain pen, in Russian, “Leo Tolstoy, 29 March 1901.” Reverse of photo bears a pictorial photographers imprint in Russian. Some light creasing to lower borders and top corners, as well as some scattered light toning and foxing, otherwise fine condition.

The Russian photographers Scherer & Nabholz specialized in portraits of authors and Czars, having first made a name for themselves in 1867 for their panoramic views of Moscow. Their photographs were frequently reproduced on postcards well into the 20th century. Interestingly, the date that Tolstoy signed this photograph was a month after he was excommunicated from the Russian Orthodox Church because of his radical anarchistic yet pacifistic Christian philosophy. A desirable pairing of the greatest of all Russian writers with the famed Russian portrait studio.
