Cabinet card of Leo Tolstoy signed in Russian on the mount, “Leo Tolstoy / 29 March 1901”, a month after he was excommunicated from the Russian Orthodox Church because of his views. Sepia toned photograph also embossed in gilt in French on the mount “Scherer et Nabholz / à Moscou.” Scherer & Nabholz were famous Russian photographers that specialized in author and Czar portraits; full pictorial photographers imprint on verso in Russian. Image measures 4” x 6.25” image has light foxing and minor defects, else in very good condition.
