Leland Stanford Signed Check Leland Stanford signs this check for $100 dated June 14, 1872 and payable to himself. There is a light bank cut cancel mark. Stanford was a California railroad magnate who began his professional career as a lawyer in Port Washington, Wisconsin. When his office and law library were destroyed by fire he followed his five brothers West, where he set up business with a stock of miners' supplies. With his associates Charles Crocker, Mark Hopkins and C.P. Huntington he was instrumental in the opening of a transcontinental railroad connection in 1869 with the joining of the Central Pacific and Union Pacific lines at Promontory Point, Utah. He is more well known today, however, as the founder of Stanford University, established as a memorial to his son. Extremely Fine. Important notice: We expect to be auctioning lots at the rate of 200-250 per hour. On occasion eBay live bid software cannot keep up with the pace of the auctions where 4-5 lots per minute can hammer down, so we recommend that you place a realistic absentee bid now as insurance to avoid disappointment. Also please note that all Heritage/CAA lots purchased through eBay Live carry a 20% Buyer's Premium. Please make sure you read the Terms and Conditions.
