Flint Jr. In full, "Enclosed please find a letter to Public Printer Palmer recommending the appointment of Mr. R. P. Stephenson in accordance with the request you made in your letter. I hope that Mr. Stephenson will be successful in obtaining the place he seeks..." The recipient of this letter was a member of a pioneering San Benito County family and one of the leading Republicans in the state of California. Leland Stanford, a business tycoon who founded Stanford University, was a Republican U.S. senator representing California at the time of this writing.
