Legal Document Signed by Alexander Hamilton, Jr.
HAMILTON, ALEXANDER, JR. 1816-1889. A legal summons signed by the second son of American Founding Father, Alexander Hamilton, for a case at the Chancery Court, City of New York, August 28, 1851. The summons is for Defendants Charles Bathgate, John Bathgate, and Alexander Bathgate. Hamilton Jr. represents the Plaintiffs, The New York New Haven Railroad Company. The case concerns an accident that took place November 5, 1849, at a junction in Westchester County, where a herd of cows belonging to the Bathgates strayed onto the tracks and caused the engine and cars "...to be thrown off the track and greatly broken and injured." The Plaintiffs are requesting $10,000 in damages. The document has text on both sides, and measures in total 21 3/8" x 8", with tears and separations at the folds; it is currently framed between glass (frame 23 1/4" x 10"). Condition is overall fair to good, the text clear and readable, but with the noted tears and separations. Additionally, there are small holes on at least three of the paper segments, including at Hamilton Jr.'s signature.
