Politician (born 1923) sometimes called the ‘father of Taiwan's democracy’ who served as president of the Republic of China [Taiwan] from 1988 to 2000. TLS signed “Teng hui Lee,” two pages, 8.5 x 10.75, President of the Republic of China letterhead, September 3, 1996. Letter to Senator Paul Simon, in part: “As you wind up a most distinguished career in the Senate, I would like to take this opportunity to express my appreciation for your long-standing staunch friendship for the Republic of China as well as your role in advancing relations between our two countries. Throughout your long years of service, you have rendered us strong and steadfast support in many ways. You call for an ROC seat in the U.N. and other international organizations, you speak highly of our democratization, and you call for peace across the Taiwan Straits. I am grateful, in particular, for your kind assistance in realizing my visit to Cornell, my alma mater, in June last year.” In fine condition, with a light crease to upper right corner. Letters from the Taiwanese leader, especially with political content, are difficult to find and highly sought after.
