<Our item number 110920><B>Lee, Stephen Dill.</B> War-date correspondence between Gen. Stephen Dill Lee &#40;no relation to the Virginia Lees&#41; and Gen. Joseph E. Hooker, Signed by Lee at the bottom, &#34;<I>Jackson Miss / Jan 19, 1864 / A true copy / S.D. Lee / Maj. Genl</I>,&#34; one page, on blue, ruled paper, 10&#34; x 8&#34;. Archivally framed with Tru-vue conservation glass to an overall size of 18&#34; x 19¾&#34;. Very good; some toning and a few edge splits. Accompanied by an original carte-de-visite photograph of Stephen D. Lee. The letter is datelined Grenada, Nov. 23rd 1863, to Gen. Johnston in Meridian: &#34;The Civil authorities in North Miss are issuing writs to recover wagons & teams captured trading with the Enemy….Trading is being carried on…measures are necessary to stop it. I advise that all captives be confiscated ….Will hold property until I hear from you….&#34; Gen. Johnston&#39;s reply is recorded below: &#34;The Secretary of War directs that wagons & teams employed in trade w ith the enemy are suject to Confiscation, therefore maintain such Confiscation….&#34; Stephen Dill Lee&#39;s signature is considered &#34;most desirable&#34; &#40;Reese&#41;. <BR><BR>Lee was at the surrender of Vicksburg. After his exchange, he was promoted Maj.
