Unsigned ALS written by Lee Harvey Oswald, but signed by his wife “Marina,” one page, lightly-lined, 5.75 x 8, July 28. Letter to Vada and Robert Oswald in Fort Worth, Texas. In full: “Today we received your gift and I am very glad to have such a nice present. I like the necklace very much. Thank you for your thoughtfulness. Earlier we received your fotographes [sic] of little Robert. He is a very cute tot. It is surprising such a trim and delicate woman can have such fine and healthy children. Now a little about ourselfs [sic]. We are getting ready to see you and your children. I hope it shall be soon. To the near meeting…” Accompanied by the original mailing envelope, addressed by Marina, and postmarked Minsk, July 28, 1961. In fine condition, with intersecting mailing folds, one through a single letter of signature, and mild overall wrinkling.
This correspondence dates to the bizarre odyssey that took Oswald from the Soviet Union and returned him to American soil—and his rendezvous with destiny. About two months earlier, Oswald had notified the US Embassy in the USSR that he had married and requested that he and his pregnant bride, Marina, be allowed to reenter the United States. Days before writing this letter, he had feverishly been working with officials to secure the necessary paperwork to achieve that goal. Oswald was apparently more than ready to return to the US—a country he had openly turned his back on—his reunion with family members would take ten more months, courtesy of slow-moving Russian and US officials. One must imagine: if only the bureaucrats had taken a little longer, how might history have been changed? Pre-certified John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and RRAuction COA.
