ALS signed “Lee,” two pages on two adjoining lightly-lined sheets, 5.5 x 8, March 28 [1962]. Letter to his mother, with spelling and punctuation retained. In full: “Today I received the affidavids from Mr. Phillips. You asked weather I’ll be staying at your place or Roberts in Ft. Worth. I don’t think I’ll be staying at either but I will be visiting both. In any event I’ll won’t to live on my own and probably will finally live in Ft. Worth or New Orleans. We will undoubtably come by ship to the U.S. which will be a two week trip. I’ll let you know when we leave Soviet Union. I still don’t know our exact date of departure yet as there are still a few things to be done before we shove off.
As I said in my last letter we shall be coming probably in April. I allready told you I received those clippings and so forth O.K. The money situation is pretty good although I’d like to have enough to fly to the states but thats not too lightly at this time, still its not very important as regards the mode of transportation. June Lee, feels fine, she already weights 22 lbs. and is 1 1/2 months old. Marina feels very well also. We are in constant touch with the Embassy so all is well. That’s about all for now.” After his signature, Oswald adds a short postscript reading: “Marina sends her love. P.P.S. Today we also received your card. Thanks.”
This letter was an official exhibit (No. 196) in the Warren Commission investigation into JFK’s assassination and, like most of the exhibits, is protectively and permanently soft-laminated. In fine condition, with uniform light toning and surface marks and usual creases to laminate.
This letter dates to a period as Oswald prepared to return to the United States. The affidavits referenced pertain to a US Department of Immigration and Naturalization requirement of proof that someone would be able to financially support his wife, Marina—a pledge that a Mr. Phillips here apparently endorsed. As further noted here, he was still debating whether to stay with his mother upon his eventual return, with his brother in Fort Worth, or in New Orleans, the city of his birth and where he still had some family members. How the family would get back to America was also in question, as Oswald had received a loan through the American Embassy which required him to use the cheapest method of transportation possible. “We will undoubtably [sic] come by ship to the U.S. which will be a two week trip...although I’d like to have enough to fly to the states,” he tells his mother. An insightful and optimistic Oswald that gives little evidence of the darkness that lurked within his heart. This letter was among the wealth of evidence examined by the Warren Commission following John F. Kennedy’s assassination to disprove any involvement by the Soviet Union in the president’s death.
