The Lee-Enfield SMLE No. 1 Mk III, introduced in 1907, is a legendary bolt-action rifle renowned for its reliability, speed, and adaptability, playing a pivotal role in British and Commonwealth forces during both World Wars. Chambered for the .303 British cartridge, it offered excellent range, stopping power, and accuracy. Its innovative design included a 10-round magazine, larger than most contemporaries, which could be quickly reloaded using stripper clips for rapid fire. The smooth rear-locking bolt allowed for unmatched cycling speed, making it ideal for the demands of trench warfare. Compact and durable, the SMLE excelled in harsh environments, solidifying its reputation as a cornerstone of military history and a symbol of British resilience.
This No.1 Mk III* rifle, estimated to have been manufactured between WWI and the interwar period, retains traces of its wartime anti-corrosion paint and grease beneath the woodline, suggesting it likely saw action during WWII. It features various proof markings, including the King George British military proof and evidence of factory refurbishment at Ishapore, India, in 1945. All parts bear the matching serial number 12078Y. The metal components exhibit a blend of patina and dark tones from rebluing. The rifle has a full wood stock with a striking deep golden-yellow hue and a tiger stripe pattern on the rear and front handguards and displays a variety of dents and scratches, each a testament to its rugged use and storied service history over the past century.
The rifle is showcased in a custom-built Commemorative D-Day 80th Anniversary display case, crafted by BKG Custom to resemble a WWII-era rifle crate. The case is marked "No1 Rifle, SMLE Mk III, ROF Maltby, .303 Cal" and features a "Never Forget" veterans medallion alongside a "D-Day 80 Years" Union Jack medallion. A built-in LED strip light, operated via remote control, highlights the rifle inside, while the case itself can be wall-mounted, making for an exceptional and visually striking display.
This rifle, with its historical significance, matching serial numbers, and unique markings, is a standout piece for any firearms collector. Paired with the custom D-Day 80th Anniversary display case, it combines authenticity, craftsmanship, and a striking presentation, making it an ideal centerpiece for any collection.
