Influential American jurist (1872–1961) best known for his opinions on contract law, economics, and the First Amendment. TLS, two pages, 8 x 10.5, personal letterhead, April 3, 1947. Complimentary letter to Judge John M. Sternhagen. In part: “When I saw your name on any opinion I knew that I should be enlightened, and I felt that it would be dangerous to differ. Amid all the nonsense—to be frank—which has come out of the Supreme Court about the Tax Court, I have always felt that you were the exception which pro tanto might justify what they said. Indeed, whether they said it or not, the deference I felt for your judgment required no word of theirs.” In fine condition, with intersecting folds (one vertical fold passing through a single letter of the signature). Accompanied by the original mailing envelope.
