A mounted and framed black and white panorama of the Arkansas Valley Smelting plant along the Arkansas River in Leadville. The demonetization of silver in 1893 resulted in the closing of most of the mines around Leadville. All but one of the smelters closed, but the survivor became the great Arkansas Valley Smelter, the largest smelter in Colorado, which operated into the 1960s. Situated at an elevation of 10,152 feet (3,094 m), Leadville is the highest incorporated city and the second highest incorporated municipality in the United States. A former silver mining town that lies near the headwaters of the Arkansas River in the heart of the Rocky Mountains. Photo measures 8" x 45", with frame and mounting measures 14.5" x 53". Appears to be early 1900s and is very sharp and clear. Matting with gold border makes the picture pop. It is in near new condition. - Ken & Rosemary Roberts Collection -59018
