Lead City,Dakota South - Lawrence County - 1889 - Homestake Mine Photograph :
This 9 1/4" by 7 1/2" gold mounted photo by John C. H. Grabill shows the Homestake works in action. The photo is part of Graybill's series "Mills and Mines" and numbered 2004. With the mounting the photo measures 9 3/4" by 7 3/4." The mounting shows slight wear at the corners. Grabill's name and numerous credentials are printed in gold on the right side of the mounting. The photo itself is focused and has great contrast. Most noteworthy is that this photograph has not been framed and shows no acid disintegration whatsoever as some in this series have. The Homestake Mine was the largest gold mine in the country. This photo shows what a large complex the mine was. It has a second mine behind the main one in the photo. There are covered trestles taking the ore to the mill. Viewers can also see the most recent dig site because part of a hill behind the mill has been washed away. Most likely the big white object coming down the mountain is a hose used in hydraulic mining.
