No vignette, red border and print with embossed seal at lower left. Uncancelled. Measures 4 1/4 x 7 3/4". Datelined Lead City, Dakota. Lead (pronounced “leed”) was founded in July, 1876, following the discovery of gold. "Lead" is a mining term describing an outcropping of gold bearing ore. One of the first enterprises of the Gold Rush of 1876 was the Homestake Gold Mine. The mine was operated by the Homestake Mining Company, which founded Lead as a “company town” for its employees (Ref: leadmethere.org). Several slight vertical fold lines, otherwise very fine.
