Scarce original ink drawing of NY Jets legend Joe Namath in action on the field on a white 11 x 16 sheet. Signed in pencil, “LeRoy Neiman 69” and also signed in pencil by its subject, “Joe Willie Namath #12.” Double cloth matted and framed to an overall size of 23.25 x 29.25. In fine condition, with negligible handling wear and a few tiny spots.
Only someone with the bravado—and throwing arm—of Joe Namath would so boldly guarantee a Jets victory against a heavily favored Baltimore Colts team. Seventeen out of 28 passes later, and by a final of 16-7, the Jets showed football fans who was the best team...in the process pulling off one of the greatest upsets in sports history. Neiman was there for it all that gridiron season. The artist had attended New York Jets practices and games for much of the season leading up to the Big Game, capturing the fluid motion and personal feelings of the athletes—Joe Willie included—all of which in evidence in this artwork. It was undoubtedly during (or shortly thereafter) one of those encounters that Neiman created this drawing, portraying the Hall of Fame quarter in typical Neiman style. A rare opportunity to own a one-of-a-kind Neiman original!
