Featured in this lot is this Le Celebre Graman Quacy Tardieu copper engraving originally published 1796. The artwork features a wonderfully and professionally crafted copper engraving construction that shows Graman Quassi who was a healer, botanist, slave and later freedman and is pictured in a fine gold lace brocade coat, waistcoat, cane and hat, the outfit being a gift from the Prince of Orange during Quassi's visit to the Hague. The backdrop is a coastal landscape perhaps of Suriname's capital Paramaribo where Quassi lived and died. From J.G.Stedman's 'Narrative of a Five Years' Expedition against the Revolted Slaves of Surinam' published in 1796. The engraving reads as follows: Pl. XXXXl. - Grave par Tardian Laine - Le celebre Graman Quacy. The condition of this copper engraving is well preserved with some chipping to the frame but otherwise shows a well preserved condition. The measurements of this framed engraving is 10 1/2" x 8 1/2" and the visible artwork is 9 7/8" x 7 3/4".
