Dutch painter (1836–1912) famed for his exotic portrayals of the luxury and decadence of antiquity. ALS signed “L. Alma-Tadema,” one page, 3.75 x 6, personal letterhead, August 20, 1911. Letter to "Miss Barnes," probably Grace Edith Barnes, the secretary of American painter and stained glass window maker John La Farge. In full: "I am so sorry I cannot be of any use to you and your publication on Lafarge for I do not remember having corresponded with him on any subject. I know I had a nice letter to introduce you to me but I fear even that is gone so please do without my letters. I loved the man and his work & I am one of those who sincerely deplore his loss." In very good to fine condition, with some creasing, and a light stain to the top. In 1886, Alma-Tadema had commissioned La Farge to make a stained glass window for his studio, now known as 'Peonies Blown in the Wind' and held by Boston's Museum of Fine Arts.
