Laurence Olivier (1907-1989) was one of the most revered actors of the 20th Century. He was nominated for an Oscar fourteen times, winning twice. A director and producer, Olivier adapted many Shakespearean plays for the screen, such as 1944's Henry V. During World War II he served in the Royal Navy. Olivier was knighted in 1947 and made life peer in 1970.
This signed black and white portrait photograph shows a young Olivier, dressed neatly in suit and tie, gazing sombrely to his right. The soft directional lighting highlights his face but keeps his eyes in shadow, adding a touch of mystery to his expression.
Olivier's signature is expressively inscribed in ink on a clear space to the left of the image, marked underneath with a swirled line. Measuring 6x5, this photograph is in very good condition. Some edges are slightly uneven due to original cut marks, but this does not detract from the image or autograph.
