Nice ''Lt JEB Stuart 1st Cavalry Regl'' signature partially dated 1857 [Fort Leavenworth, Kansas]. Known to his friends as ''Jeb'' from the initials of his given names, Stuart was a cavalry commander headquartered at Fort Leavenworth on the Kansas frontier known for his mastery of reconnaissance and the use of cavalry in support of offensive operations. On 20 December 1855, he was promoted to First Lieutenant and was wounded in a skirmish with the Cheyenne Indians on the Solomon River in Kansas on 29 July 1857, the year this autograph was signed. Signature appears on a 4.25'' x 1.25'' lower portion of document with some toning from previous mounting in blank area above writing can be easily matted over. Overall, near fine.
