Manufacturer: Nagoya Model: Type 97
This is an excellent example of a late WWII Japanese Type 97 Sniper rifle as produced at the Chigusa factory under the supervision of the Nagoya Arsenal. These were based on the earlier Type 38 rifle and were produced right up to the end of WWII. The highest recorded serial number was at approximately 14040, so this is a fairly late war rifle. The side of the receiver is marked with the Nagoya Arsenal symbol over the series "1" mark next to serial number. The top of the receiver had the Royal Chrysanthemum (which has been ground) along with the Kana characters indicating a Type 97 rifle. This rifle has the original WWII scope base attached to the left side of the receiver and is fitted with an original 2.5X sniper scope. The scope is marked over the rear eyepiece with: "2.5 X 10/with EK, inside a double inverted triangle/No.24947". The side of the scope base has the Japanese Kana characters with a series "1" mark. It has the original Japanese sniper reticle inside the scope that is graduated from 2-14 (200-1400 meters) for elevation with 20 degrees of deflection, left and right. The scope is complete with an original WWII Japanese canvas scope case. The rifle itself has the original matching numbered, turned down sniper bolt with matching cocking knob, firing pin, extractor and front barrel band. The rifle has the original late war features such as the long staff rear sight graduated from 4-22 (400-2200 meters), without anti-aircraft wings, no drain holes on the underside of the stock, with a late middle barrel band that has the unmachined block for the monopod. It retains its original WWII stock with cupped sheet metal buttplate.
BBL: 31 1/4 inch round
Stock: hardwood
Gauge: 6.5 mm Japanese
Finish: blue
Grips:
Serial Number: 10688
Condition:
Very fine as partially refinished with 98% of the original blued finish overall with some minor blue loss on the edges of the floorplate and top of the middle barrel band. The stock and handguard both have been heavily sanded and have been varnished, but both still show raised wood over the metal edges. They both were probably in excellent condition before being varnished, which could be removed and restained closer to the original color. The sniper scope retains 95% of it's original black finish with clear optics, that shows some specks inside which is very common for these early scopes. The scope case is in excellent condition with nice original color overall with tight stitching.
