Late Production, Rinaldo A. Carr Inspected, U.S. Colt Single Action Cavalry Model Revolver with Fact
Estimate: $8500 - 13000
This is an example of a U.S. contract Colt Single Action Cavalry Model revolver that was manufactured in 1891. This was the final year of production for U.S. contract Single Action revolvers. The revolver is complete with a Colt factory letter that states it was shipped to Springfield Armory in April 14, 1891. The revolver was inspected by Ordnance Sub-Inspector Rinaldo A. Carr (R.A.C.) and Captain Stanhope E. Blunt (SEB). This revolver is one of the last examples of the 37,063 Single Action Army revolvers purchased by the Ordnance Department between 1873 and 1891. The revolver has the military blue finish on the barrel, ejector housing, cylinder, trigger guard and back strap. The frame, loading gate and hammer have a color case-hardened finish and the one-piece walnut grip is oil finished. The revolver has the oval ejector housing adopted about serial number 113,000 and the cavalry style hammer with elongated, bordered knurling on the spur. The top of the barrel is roll-stamped with address: "COLT'S PT. F.A. MFG. Co. HARTFORD CT. U.S.A.-" in elongated block letters. The left side of the frame is roll-stamped with the Colt 'three-date/two-line' patent markings used only on the last few R.A.C. inspected revolvers, followed by the "U.S" property mark. The Sub-Inspector's initials, "R.A.C." are stamped on the underside of the barrel, the bottom of the frame above the serial number and on the side of the cylinder. A "K" Colt sub-inspection mark is stamped on the trigger guard, the back strap, in the hammer well above the firing pin hole, on the front of the ejector housing and on the barrel behind the ejector housing stud. "P" proof marks are stamped on the underside of the barrel in front of the "R.A.C." sub-inspection mark and on the side of the cylinder. The full serial number, "139149" is stamped on the bottom of the frame, trigger guard and back strap. The partial serial number. "9149", is stamped on the barrel beneath the ejector housing and on the side of the cylinder. All of the visible serial numbers match. The assembly number "1752" is stamped on the inside of the loading gate. The lower left side of the grip is stamped with the date "1891" above the script initials "SEB" enclosed in a rectangle with rounded edges. Traces of the script sub-inspection mark which consists of the script initials "RAC" in a rectangle is visible on the lower right side of the grip..
BBL: 7 1/2 In
Stock:
Gauge: 45 Colt
Finish: blue/case-hardened
Grips: walnut
Serial Number: 139149
Condition: Very fine. The revolver retains 70% of the original blue finish. The barrel has feathered polishing marks on either side of the front sight blade and above the ejector housing stud. Most of the blue finish on the barrel is intact with the exception of some minor edge wear at the muzzle. The blue finish on the exposed side of the ejector housing is thin. The trigger guard and back strap have about 40% of the blue finish. The cylinder retains about 70% of the original finish with some thinning and drag marks. About 40% of the case hardened finish is present on the frame, hammer and loading gate. There is some silvering on the recoil shield and top strap with strong case colors in protected areas. All of the markings on the barrel, frame and other components are sharp. The bore is bright. The action is crisp and functions perfectly. The one-piece walnut grip[ is in very good condition. The "1891" date and "SEB" final inspection mark on the lower left side of the grip are light but legible and the script "RAC" sub-inspection mark on the lower right side of the grip is faint but visible. The small "R.A.C." sub-inspection mark usually found on the grip heels is not visible. This is a very fine original example of a Colt Single Action Cavalry Model revolver made during the last year of U.S. contract Colt Single Action production.
