Late 1900s Basin Creek Watershed Sign Butte, Mont.
Featured in this lot is this Basin Creek Watershed sign from Butte, Montana circa late 1900s. The Basin Creek Watershed was home to several mining operations in the late 1800s, when Butte was a thriving mining town. These mining operations severely harmed the environment, releasing heavy metals and other contaminants into the watershed. As the effects of mining on the Basin Creek Watershed's environment became more obvious over time, steps were taken to address the issue. The Montana Department of Environmental Quality launched a significant cleanup initiative in the watershed in the 1990s with the goal of removing contaminated soil and water and returning the area to its more natural state. Today, the Basin Creek Watershed is a crucial component of Butte's natural environment and provides the locals with drinking water.
The city and state continue to monitor the watershed and work to mitigate any environmental damage that may occur in the future. The sign shows an all wood construction and is painted white. The sign reads, "Basin Creek Watershed / Butte Municipal Water Supply / No Camping, Fishing Or Recreation Beyond This Point" in black lettering. The sign shows good condition with some areas of chipped wood and fading to the paint, while the middle appears to have some bullet holes. The sign is still in good readable and display condition. The sign measures 23 7/8" L x 31 7/8" W.
