Late 18th-Early 19th Century Colonial Hand-Forged Iron Fur Trade Hunting Trap
Federal Period
Colonial Era Hand-Forged Iron Fur Trade Hunting Trap
Late 18th to Early 19th Century, Hand-Forged Blacksmith made, Iron Animal Hunting Trap, Very Fine.
All of the individual elements of this Trap have been individually Hand-forged, measuring 18" long x 9" wide x 6.25" high, with large 9” “Jaws” and weighing 3 lbs 6 oz. Examples such as this were commonly used during the 18th and early/mid 19th century to trap a variety of game. More commonly, they were used for Trapping in the animal pelt trade. Furs were the “fashion” of the period, not only within coats, but in top hats as well. There is some great iron craftsmanship throughout, with some great elements of design on the spring and jaws. This Trap does not exhibit any makers mark it is likely an earlier variation by an unknown blacksmith. A more modern weld and wire repair are shown in the images. There is some expected light pitting and an excellent natural color and patina, with a good strong mainspring. Pleasing for a period example and/or theme display.
