Largest known pair of American dueling pistols signed John P. Lovell, Boston, .52 caliber smoothbore. Approx. 13” heavy octagon barrels, 19-1/4” overall. German silver mounts, brown barrel, case hardened locks and breeches, with fancy German Silver sideplate, circa approx. 1840. The pair remain in original very good plus condition, with 30-50% original brown on barrels, some spotting, just beginning erosion and pinprick pitting. Locks and tangs show 50-70% case hardening that is drifting and dulling slightly, but still some areas of rainbow color showing, particularly on the tangs. One stock is very good plus showing 90% original varnish, just some minor scratches, minor marks. The mate shows a repair at the wrist and some light refinishing at the back end and about good overall. The pair are contained within their original to the period brownish velveteen-line partition style case. The case remains in good to very good condition with some slight edge wear, some minor fraying, some indentations ant contact points but at least very good overall.
