Large wood crate of authentic gold rush-era brass scale weights, originally descended thru a family from a dredging mine near Smartsville, Yuba County, California; the wood box is approx. 14” x 11” x 8” showingwear and losses to the lower right rear corner of the base; weights range in size from a 150 oz. weight to a ½ oz. weight with a number of the weights being marked with maker names like C. Stagg, J.L. Brown andAubury; also dates 1856, 1857, 1858, 1859, & 1860. The interior wooden block holder for the weights is lined in red material; 3 weights appear to have been cleaned at one time but the remaining 16 weights show aheavy dark patina. A hard-to-find early California mining collectible. Est.: $2,000-$3,000.
