Large, silver-mounted early American made hand-forged Bowie Knife, circa mid 1830-40’s, 13” long clipped-pointed blade with sharpened false edge, 3/8” thick, 2 1/8” wide, with carved curly maple handle that is mounted with an engraved coin silver crossguard, ferrule and butt cap. The knife is 17 7/8” overall. The blade has the distinct temper line found on fine, early American hand-forged Bowie knives, like the Japanese Samurai Swords, where the cutting edge has been hardened for maximum sharpness, while the back of the blade is annealed to a softer temper to avoid snapping. The blade shows minor pitting and discoloration that one would expect from its age. There are also some old cuts along the spine, resharpening and a small chip on the cutting edge, indicating that the knife may have been used in combat, but remains in otherwise fine condition.
