Large early 19th century officer's pistol converted from flintlock to percussion signed Howell and Simmons. The pistol measures 15" overall with 8 7/8" oct. bbl in approx. 69 cal. smoothbore. The stock has been reduced approx 4"from muzzle and was a full stock now slightly longer than half-stock (often stocks were altered when converted) The hammer is a forged American style as is the bolster and the conversion was in our opinion an American accomplishment. Thesilver plaque inlaid at wrist is engraved with initials P.B. in fancy script. The condition is fair to good with a large crack to stock near by, trigger guard, good metal with normal aging. A hickory ramrod with brass head which appearsAmerican is also included. From a Southern family which contended it was kept for dueling (just in case the family honor was insulted) The current descendent and consignor prefers a sig and figures the family honor went out the window when theymoved to California and became socialists in the 1930's. Est. $400 - $800
