Large and fancy semi-spearpoint Bowie knife with elaborate crown pommel, mother of pearl scales, marked W. Butcher (with Crown R Marking, circa 1830-37). Integral cast German silver hilt with elliptical shaped crossguard. Blade shows 9/32” heavy-construction stock and fine shaped semi-spearpoint with median ridge to grind with a dagger style profile and early sharpened false edge (swedge). Markings are located on left rear of blade flat as it is made without a ricasso. The blade is near fine with most of the original polish, just some minor pitting, staining, and normal aging. No evidence of sharpening, with a fine edge, full tip, and full original dimensions. The mother of pearl scales are of ‘select’ quality and show German silver escutcheon. The condition is near fine overall and this is an impressive and high grade early knife of an unusual form. Hugh Hayes Collection. Est: $6,000 - $12,000
