Gaddang Tribe, northern Luzon, Philippines. Beautifully made and preserved, it is a large and important example of a dying need (since head-hunting and warfare among the tribes has fallen off since WWII). These were mounted on a frame during the pre-war or pre-headhunting ceremonies to block out viewing by the women of the village (bad luck) AND to attract good spirits to their preparatory rituals for this dangerous expedition. Made 1935-1955, it probably was used less than a handful of times and carefully stored away since. Masterful herringbone pattern in blue & grey, separated by color bands and lozenge designs. 84"X47-1/2" and joined at the center and having unusual wrapped edges. Near mint-condition and a handsome showpiece.
