Large Sheffield Bowie knife by early maker “Marshes and Shepherd Ponds St.” with clipped point blade. Approx 15” overall with 10-1/2” blade, stag horn scales and integral cross hilt and pommel cast in German silver. Blade is of heavy construction and shows “Superior Bowie Knife” marking circa about 1840. Interesting and crude period inscription “C. Buyns and River Ohio” with other calligraphy, stampings, and scratching by original owner. This knife shows 5/16” heavy stock blade with fancy escutcheon plate and high quality throughout. Original scabbard missing belt attachment loop at top. The knife is in good to very good condition with full dimensions and original tip. Some spotting, staining, and minor pitting. Good aged patina overall. Shrinkage and slight damages to stag. Very few early knives ever show hot-stamping with phrase “Bowie, etc”. Est: $3,500 - $7,000
