<td width="100%">
A beautiful scene of poplar trees on the edge of a lake with hills in background. This a a hand-cut scissors silhouette by Lotte Cracknell, who worked in Germany during the lead-up to World War II. This silhouette is signed and dated 1937/38. The black trees are mounted on whiten tissue, with a clever technique of achieving distance, by placing the silhouette of the hills behind one layer. Monochrome work. Whole framed measures 53.5cm by 29.5cm (21 inches by 11.3/4 inches. The actual work measures 39cm (15.1/2 inches) by 20cm (8 inches). Recently reframed, the framer has put the signature etc. and details on the rear. Silhouette also signed with a cut-out ?C? in the lower right hand corner.
The work of this remarkable artist rarely appears in public, as most of it was presented to family and friends. In the early 1930s, one of Ms Cracknell's silhouettes was used a a background print for the standard telegram form in Germany. However, owing to her strong opinions, she fell from favour when the Third Reich came to power. This work, and two others that we have for sale, were given to family friends in the 1930s. We are selling on their behalf.
