Large "Piano" Style Class A Handtub, Pumper. Built circa 1840 by the James Smith Company of New York. Originally thought to have served in the volunteer companies of NYC, this machine was purchased and used by the Laingsburg, MI Fire Department in the late 1800's and early 1900's it was known at that location as the "Man Killer" due to the manual effort necessary to flow water through the machine to the fire. This machine is mostly original and is fully operational and restored to its original factory condition--it has been pumped in the NESVFL Musters in New England and streamed over 140 feet. The main water box is made of Cuban mahogany 32" wide X 10' long and the 9" cylinder and waterways of brass, the air chamber of copper. It measures 15' long X 5' wide in the main body with the fold down brake arms being 18'. Length of tongue (draw pole) 8'.
