Osage beaded flat bag with yellow-ochred hide. Fully beaded front with a geometric design. The flap is also decorated with beadwork that spills over slightly to the back. Beads are white, pale blue, cobalt, white-heart red, yellow and green. The bag is 11 1/2" long, with a width tapering from 8" to 10 3/4". 6 1/2" of twisted fringe is attached to the bottom. Condition: losses to the fringe, beadwork is excellent with some missing beads along the trim of the flap. Included with the bag is a signed letter detailing its family history: the bag was gifted to Fern Weidman (as a child) of Wichita, Kansas, by the famous Osage Chief Bacon Rind (Wah-she-hah); it has remained in the family until now. Also included is a postcard photo of the Chief, dated 1915.
Provenance: Signed letter from the original recipient's grandson, detailing the history.
