Oversized bronze of an Oni on a rock, holding a gong

This Japanese copper bronze figure was made in the style of the Miyao workshop and depicts a grim Oni, which dates back to the Meiji period (1868-1912). Oni are a kind of yokai from Japanese folklore. The troll-like creatures are popular characters in Japanese art. In this case the figure stands on a pedestal, which has the form of a rock and wears an armor, accented with golden color. The Oni has an expressive face showing a fierce expression with bared teeth, a beard and bushy eyebrows. The claw feet and the muscular arms are skilfully rendered. The left hand is raised above the head and balances a lotus leaf, on which a large gong is placed. The latter is decorated on the outer wall with floral ornaments and the sound is caused by a drumstick with a wooden handle and lacquer paint. Likewise the gong is a humorous element, because Onis were originally banished using a gong.

The copper bronze figure is in good condition with natural patina and slight signs of wear consistent with age. The gong and drumstick show clearer signs of wear such as dents and lacquer abrasion. The height of the figure without gong measures 59 cm and the total height is 80 cm.
