Nubian women began hundreds of years ago to weave baskets in Sudan from the reeds of the swampy area in which they lived. In the early 1900's some Nubian people migrated from southern Sudan to settle in Western Kenya. They continue making baskets, getting the reeds from the swampy areas of Kenya. The colors are made naturally by mixing the juice of the reeds with mud and leaving it to stand for two months. This beautiful basket is made by a Nubian women who lives in the outskirts of Nairobi, near a huge swamp where she gets the reeds. Traditionally these women do not work outside their home. They weave baskets at home as their only source of income. , This Kenya Nubian Food Storage Basket is 18"tall X 28" accross. Colors include red, deep green and natural. This basket has graced our store for several years, examined by many curious customers. The ropes that make up the handle on the lid, the inside ring under the lid and the nesting ring of the basket itself show some shop wear.
