1896, 1880 - Lot of two fascinating and handsome books: 1) The Art of the World, 1896, Vol. 1, edited by Ripley Hitchcock and published by D. Appleton & Company. Well over 100 gilt pages of illustrations (some with matting), text, and protective onion-skin leaves of paper. The subject matter of this handsome book is world art, "Illustrated in the paintings, statuary, and architecture of the World`s Colombian Exposition." The illustrations are crisp--many in color, and the book is in fine condition. The cover is an impressive medium-blue with gold and black details, and gold lettering. Tucked away in the pages are: dried roses and carnations, pink fabric with gold letters reading "Our Little Boy", A handmade clipart "Puss in Boots" story book, and an October 1931 edition of "Vaughn-Ragsdale Store News" featuring ads for hats (only 74 cents!) and other accoutrements. 2) The Art Treasures of America: Being the choicest works of art in the public and private collections of North America, 1880, edited by Edward Strahan and published by George Barrie. 177 gilt pages of illustrations, text, and tables elaborating on the finest art collections in early America. This book is handsomely bound in heavy black covers with gilt trim and lettering. Both books in this lot bear age-related wear along the cover edges and spine, including foxing, staining, and some wear-through on the covers. These fantastic coffee table books would make fascinating additions to any collection of art history texts. -61700
