The Hammersley firm, which specialized in the production of richly decorated bone china of fine quality and good design until it was absorbed into the Spode and then Royal Worcester groups, was established about a century ago as a family concern headed by two cousins, Titus Hammersley and Edward Asbury. The firm was initially named Hammersley and Asbury, and continued as such until Titus died in 1875. The former had also a partnership in the firm of Harvey Adams and Co., china manufacturers of Longton, but on his death his eldest son, George, took over the direction of the business, and acquired the Harvey Adams concern, changing the name and combining both under the title they use today. From thence onward the history of the firm is of one Hammersley succeeding another until recently, when the firm was taken over and the Hammersley line eventually discontinued. <p>This large tea pot, in an unnamed pattern, is another typical example of the quality craftsmanship and handpainted artistry that characterized Hammersley china for years. The tea pot measures 11 inches long, and stands just over 6 inches high. It holds in excess of 6 cups of tea. It is decorated with handpainted fruit of various types, and signed by the artist. It is in excellent undamaged condition. Another great display piece, and the perfect tea pot to use for the fall holidays!
