A wonderful Blue & White Porcelain whatever the find location, it stands 14-1/4" tall and the lower part is about 8-1/4" across. Above cloud lappets with diamond points a 3-clawed Dragon chases an elusive Phoenix. As this was clearly being exported from China, the number of claws would likely not be important to the recipient - possible a chieftain or Sultan (and there was one who reigned near to this dive recovery site since the 14th C.). The finders dated it to the early 18th C. and it was brought out of the sea in Sulu, Paticul Site, southern Mindanao, Philippines. Since only sporadic items have come up from there it is likely that a Philippines trans-shipper who had limited cargo on board was the vessel that sank. The upper globe half has four Peony flowers along with vines and more lappets. The lappets are casually done, suggesting the painter(s) were not following any traditional pattern, but just winging it (on their own, so to speak). The quality of the Cobalt Blue is excellent and the overall appearance is dramatic and pleasing. An amazing discovery that I was lucky to snag about 3 years ago while visiting Mindanao.
