Chinese Export Ware was designed to appeal to Western Tastes and was often made to order. During the 18th century, vast amounts were shipped to Europe and on westward. Much of the fine porcelain work cosisted of stoneware in dinnerware and outstanding decorative vases, such as this one. This vase can be realistically dated to the Civil War years--about the mid 1800's. The glaze is known as salt glaze. As early as the 1600's potters used common salt to glaze their stoneware. This was accomplished by heating the salt and introducing it into the kiln at mazimun temperature. The resulting gray-white glaze was a thin, pitted surface that resembles an orange peel. This vase was appraised in 1997 at $650-$800, and the dealer will consider serious offers. It is in very good condition, having no chips or cracks. The pattern in shades of blue consists of some Hydrengia-like flowers and mirror image birds on the outter edges. The marks on the rim were "skips" that occured during the original firing. More detailed photos are available upon request.
