Oversized bronze figure of a samurai with a beautiful censer in his lifted right hand

This large Japanese figure from the Meiji period (1868-1912) is made of bronze with a copper coating. The statue is mounted on a coarse worked, rectangular marble base and shows a Samurai in a dynamic position. The latter is dressed in a richly pleated robe, decorated with butterflies. His sword is tied around the waist by a belt and secured with a loop. The samurai has an expressive facial expression, finely crafted hair and wears an elaborate headdress. The right hand is raised and the palm carries a finely chased and three legged censer. The latter is decorated with ornaments of mythical creatures and clouds, which are worked in relief. Two figural handles flank the sides and the cover is surmounted by a knob in the shape of a bird with a detailed plumage. The unusual presentation of this bronze figure shows off the variety of the Japanese metal ware manufacturers and their extremely fine elaboration at the time.

The bronze statue is in good condition with signs of age and wear. The feet of the bird on the censer’s lid are missing though and little loss of material on the robe of the Samurai is visible. The height of the figure is 53 and the total height measures 94 cm.
