This imposing bronze statue from Lanna, a former kingdom in northern Thailand, was crafted in the late 18th Century. It shows a Maravijaya Buddha in thepadmasana lotus seat with both foot soles turned upward. The Buddha rests on a double lotus throne adorned all-round in relief. The hands of the Enlightened form thebhumisparsa mudra, the gesture of touching the Earth. His left hand rests open in his lap and the right hand, placed on the knee, faces towards the ground. The Earth is thus called as a witness to the truth of his words. The tight-fitting robe, draped over his left shoulder, emphasises the body shape of the Enlightened. A peaceful facial expression, half-closed eyes and a slight smile adorn his face. A high ushnisha and individually carved curls, elongated earlobes and deep neck folds emphasise the Buddha’s majesty. A coat of lacquer showing a geometrical lozenge pattern was applied all-over at a later date.

The Buddha is in good condition with a natural patina and light signs of age and use. Small notches on the shoulder and partially some colour loss as well as minor material loss are visible. The statue measures 81 cm in height, 62 cm in width and 33 cm in depth.
