Gordian III was the grandson of emperor Gordian I, and the nephew of Gordian II. he holds the distinction of being the youngest sole emperor in Roman history. While the Senate elected Pupienus and Balbinus to serve as co-emperors, they were unpopular. It was a time of great civil unrest (called the Third Century Crisis), and the enate decided to appoint the young Gordian III as Caesar. Upon the deaths of Pupienus and Balbinus, Gordian III became emperor at the age of 13. This coin measures 27 mm. Its patina is unusually attractive. Note also the fine details still visible in the bust of Gordian III. JC-30101-154 JC-30254
