Before the overhaul of Roman coinage initiated by Diocletian in about 301 A.D., the dupondius, a brass coin, was worth 2 As, or 1/8 of a (silver) denari. Born on November 8th, in the year 30 A,.D., Nerva came to power upon the assassination of predecessor Domitian, being elected to the position by the Roman Senate. This was the first time in which the Senate elected an emperor. After just two years in office, Nerva died of natural causes (a fate reserved for only the luckiest emperors) on January 27th, in the year 98 A.D. This coin measures 26 mm. JC-30101-177
