American Belleek dates back to Centennial Exhibition of 1876, which was held in Philadelphia. At this convention, a display of Irish Belleek drew so much attention that several American manufacturers decided to try to produce a similar product. Their efforts were bolstered by the arrival of a number of Irish immigrants who had worked for the Belleek manufacturers in Ireland. As a result, the first examples of American Belleek were nearly perfect replicas of their Irish counterparts. <p>This gorgeous American Belleek jar is a fairly contemporary piece; the mark dates it to 1997 at the latest. I am not sure It is a powder jar or a biscuit jar, but it is beautiful. It is a large piece; it measures six inches across and nearly five inches high to the top of the finial. The artwork features perfect little purple violets with soft green accents and LOTS of gold. It is in perfect undamaged condition. One of my favorites!
